PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Last week the Year 3 and 5 children sat their NAPLAN testing. Congratulations to all the children for completing the testing to the best of their abilities. Results of the NAPLAN testing will be sent home to parents later in the year.

We wished Year 1 teacher Melanie Van Delft all the best as she ventured on maternity leave last week. Thank you for teaching 1MV and we hope you have a wonderful journey with your first child who is due in June.
This week we welcomed Nick Mason-Parker who will be teaching 1MV for the remainder of the year. Please say hello and make Nick feel very welcome.

The Year 4 Production rehearsals of ‘The Music Man Jr’ have been ramping up in the hall. The enthusiasm and excitement of the children is a delight to see as they begin to learn the craft of stage performing, singing and dancing. The production is set in the 1900’s in America and is sure to be an OSPS event not to be missed

Have a good week everyone.

Principal

Illness

It can be difficult for families to know when their child is sick enough to need to stay home from school. For safety’s sake, if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice.

Clearly we want children to be resilient and learn to put up with minor health matters, however it is important that students do not return to school before they are completely over illness. Apart from the fact that our facilities are limited, it is problematic if children return to school too soon and infect others.

Families can experience problems when trying to take time off to care for an ill child at home. However, it is important that parents focus not only on the wellbeing of their own child, but also upon the wellbeing of other children and the staff. If you have to administer Panadol / Nurofen before school – then your child isn’t school ready.

Antibiotics that are to be administered three times per day can be done at home. The first dose can be administered between 7am – 8.30am, the following dose can be administered between 3.45 – 4.30pm. Then the last dose can be given at 8pm or before bed.

If your child has a temperature, has vomited or had diarrhoea, they must be completely well for 24 hours before returning to school.

Student Toilets

A reminder to parents and carers that for the safety and security of our students, we ask that you do not use the student toilets.

Car Parking

Parents are NOT to use the Staff Car Park, or the disabled parks, regardless of the time of day. It is NOT to be used as a quick drop off or collection point.

This includes after Choir on a Wednesday

Please make sure you do your civic duty to follow the road laws and rules. This includes parking correctly in the signed areas, and completing 3 point turns in the middle in the intersection!

We also urge parents to please remember to be patient and polite when using the Oval Carpark, and be good role models for all the children witnessing their behaviour. With over 800 families, drop off and collection times will be busy and you will need to plan your time accordingly.

Please click here for further parking information oakleighsouthps.vic.edu.au/about-us/#parking

Qkr Payments

Qkr! continues to be our preferred method of payment for school accounts, and to make things easier for parents, class teachers and the Office, we have some changes to the Qkr! proccess this year.

Qkr will now open on a Wednesday, and after a 2 week payment window, close at 4.30pm on a Wednesday.
If you miss this payment window, or pay using BPAY, Credit Card or CSEF, you will need to complete the orange form, available from your Classroom Teacher, for processing via the Classroom Cash Book.

Please ensure you have registered your children for this year, checking you have selected the correct year level and class.

If you have any queries or any issues accessing your Qkr account please email Sarah Van Deursen   vandeursen.sarah.e@edumail.vic.gov.au with the following details, so we can follow up with our Qkr account mamanger:

*  User’s email address registered with Qkr
*  User’s mobile number in Qkr
*  First name and surname of one or more of the user’s children.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

District Cross Country

On Tuesday the 7th of May, Oakleigh South ventured to a sunny Bald Hill Park hoping to defend our District Cross Country title. All the students had been training for about 10 weeks for the big occasion. It was a super tight contest all day, but we managed to hold Coatesville off by 4 points to again win the title. Everyone ran so well and we are so proud of your efforts.

Congratulations to Jai, Nikita, Max, Sophie, Tricia, Lucia, Austin, Sienna, Vanessa, Jake, Tahj, Kate and Lauren who finished in the top 8 and have qualified for Division Cross Country to be held on the 28th of May.

Thank you to all the helpers who make Running Club possible. Jade Freeman and Helen Paroukas have been enormously helpful with the breakfasts. Enis Wintersea and Maria Sakellaris have been fantastic with their help for Nick Crane and Marcus Mooney with coaching. It has been a huge effort by all.

Well done to Oakleigh South on a wonderful day.

Sport and PE

Winter Sport is well under way for the Gr 6 children. All children are playing one sport – Football, Soccer, Netball, Sofcrosse or Rounders. OSPS are playing home this Thursday afternoon against St Andrews, with Football playing away at Centenary Park V St Peters. Please come along and support the children.

During PE – Term 2, the Yr 3 – 6 children have been taught the different Athletic Disciplines in preparation for the House Athletics Carnival. All Yr 4 – 6 children participate at the House Athletics and selected Yr 3 children.

The House Athletics will be held at Duncan McKinnon on Friday 21st of June. If any parents have a background in Athletics and can help on the day, please contact me – mooney.marcus.d@edumail.vic.gov.au

I will then organise a meeting in the week leading up to the Athletics Day with all parent helpers.

Children in Grade 2 have been refining their skills in overarm throwing, ball bouncing, bat hitting, chest passing, bat tennis and kicking.

It’s great to see so many children participating in sport out of school.

Congratulations to Theo (Football), Reanna (Basketball) and Lote (Basketball) who have all reached the Southern Metro Championship stage for their chosen sports. They are very talented athletes.
