PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
As we gradually return to normality at OSPS, last Thursday and Friday, the Prep children invited their mum or special person to come to their classroom and celebrate Mother’s Day with them. There was much excitement as the children indulged their mums with painted nails, make up and massages, cookie decorating, craft activities, bracelet making and singing. Thank you to all the mums and special people who made the children’s day, and I am sure they made your day too!
Yesterday we welcomed our parent community back to be part of the junior assembly. It was wonderful to see our prep students up on stage for the very first time singing their Mother’s Day song. There were many Valued Student Awards handed out to many proud students. The juniors showcased what has been happening in their year levels with videos on Mother’s Day afternoon in the preps, Flash Bang Fizz Science in year 1 and Dino Day in year 2. Thank you to the year 3 students who assisted in running this week’s assembly. We are all looking forward to next week’s senior assembly. Parents are welcome to attend.
Yesterday the year 3 and 5 children started their NAPLAN testing. First up was the writing task for both year levels and continues today with the year 5 reading task. The testing will take place online over a two-week period, concluding on Thursday 19th May. Good luck everyone.
Have a great week,
Ron

SMILE SQUAD
The team from Smile Squad have finished the dental check-ups of the children who participated in the program.
The mobile treatment van should be arriving onsite at the end of next week. The Oral Health Therapist will be seeing any students who still need to be seen for dental check-ups (mostly in Grade Prep) and she will also provide treatment to a handful of students where parents have consented. The majority of students have already been to our base clinic in Clayton to have their treatment done.
Thank you to every family who utilised this service. It has been a fantastic government initiative and very well supported by our community.

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF)
The Victorian Government offer a Sports, Camps and Excursions Fund for families who hold a valid means-tested concession card are eligible to apply. A special consideration category also exists.

STUDENT SHOWCASE

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!!!
On Thursday the 5th and Friday the 6th May, the OSPS Prep classrooms welcomed their Mums and a few select visitors for some special pampering!
Our delightful guests were treated to new hairstyles, colourful nails, a relaxing hand massage and deliciously decorated cookies.
Many funny photos were snapped, as the children and their mums enjoyed a delightful afternoon together.
Portraits were drawn, books were read and bracelets made for our wonderful Prep Mums.
The lucky Mums were also given handmade cards, profiles and badges crafted by the children during the week.
Thank You to all those who joined us for the special event.
Our Mother’s Day afternoon is a beautiful celebration for one of the most important people in the children’s lives.

RESILIENCE PROJECT

RESILIENCE PROJECT – PREP
This week the preps explored the meaning of mindfulness. We learnt that it is the ability to be calm and present at any given moment.
We practised this through slowing down and concentrating on one thing at a time like our breathing. We recognised that breathing can help us to be mindful and feel relaxed. We identified that when we feel worried, we can focus on our breathing to help us feel calm.
We have been practising mindful breathing by sitting or lying still and silent. We then discussed how we felt before and after we practised our mindful breathing. Working on mindfulness gives us opportunities to develop our ability to pay attention to the present moment and our thoughts.
Practising mindfulness daily can help us stay focused on set tasks and reduce stress and anxiety.
