PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Today is World Math’s Day and here at Oakleigh South, the children celebrated the day engaging in lots of fun maths activities. Mathletics is an amazing online maths platform which not only teaches maths concepts but complements and consolidates the concepts taught in the classroom. The teachers can differentiate the program to suit each individual child by setting tasks that are relevant to their specific learning.
As suggested in last week’s newsletter article, the children can join millions of students across the globe as they celebrate World Maths Day and compete in Live Mathletics challenges. We encourage all students to take part, try their best and most importantly have fun. May the best Mathlete win!
The Year 4 students are working very hard on their production, ‘Pirates at Noon Kids’. The performances will be held in the last week of this term. Our Year 6 students have also begun working on their production of, ‘Matilda Jnr.’ which will be held later in Term 3.
Just a final reminder that the Year 3 and 5 children will be participating in NAPLAN testing next Tuesday (Language Conventions & Writing), Wednesday (Reading) and Thursday (Mathematics).
Enjoy your week.

PERFORMING ARTS
Wow! What a great to start to the year in Performing Arts across our school. We are all so excited to be able to sing, dance and perform to an audience again.
The Junior and Senior choirs have both performed at assemblies, our Victorian State School Spectacular Mass Dance and Mass Choir students have started rehearsing for live shows later in the year, and a few fabulous Year 6 students have started a fun lunchtime dance club on Mondays.
The Preps, Year 1s, 2s and 3s have been exploring beat/rhythm and pitch through song, movement and percussion instruments.
Our Year 4s and Year 6s have been busy auditioning and rehearsing for their upcoming productions. This year, we have also introduced ukuleles for the Year 5s. They are loving the challenge and enjoying playing along to lots of pop songs.

Josie and Hazel in Year 5, experimenting with the ukuleles.

Siddhika and Ran playing percussion instruments in Prep.

OSPS SPORT

YEAR 6 WINTER INTERSCHOOL SPORT
Last week Year 6 students participated in Winter Interschool Sport (Round 1) with all teams playing away against Saint Pauls. Saint Pauls were fantastic opposition and displayed great sportsmanship and skill. Next week we play away again at Saint Andrews. Parents are welcome to come and support their child and if you’re available to umpire or score please speak to your child’s sports coach. The winter fixture can be found here at Bentleigh District Winter Fixture.
Students not participating in the competitive fixture enjoyed competitive games of Mat Ball at school focusing on fundamental motor skills, hand eye coordination and team work. Students also did a short fitness program and experienced umpiring their peers! Later in the term these students will also enjoy two sessions of lawn bowls at the local South Oakleigh Bowls Club.
There is no permission or payment required for the regular Winter Interschool sport program in Term 2. Thank you to Marcus Mooney, P.E staff and the Year 6 teachers for organising this wonderful program and giving up their time to coach our children.

At Oakleigh South Primary School, we love to provide engaging and challenging maths lessons at every level. We also use Mathletics to help complement our learning. This year the “World’s Largest Online Maths Competition” is back! You can join millions of students across the globe as they celebrate World Maths Day and compete in Live Mathletics challenges. There will be 20 x one-minute challenges available.

THE DRAGONET PROPHECY
WINGS OF FIRE SERIES BOOK 1
AUTHOR – TUI SUTHERLAND
AR 5.0 (10 POINTS)
The Dragonet Prophecy: This book is the first book in Wings of Fire, which throughout the whole series is based around dragons living in their own mythical world. The Dragonet Prophecy is about five dragonets destined to end a war. The book is written through the eyes of Clay, one of the five dragonets. They have lived in a cave their whole life and when they have a choice between freedom or fate, they escape and go on a journey they will never forget. During that journey they will fight for their lives on a quest to find Clay’s home. There are a lot of of unexpected turns in the book, and I really enjoyed reading it.
This book is written by Tui Sutherland, it is on 5.0 and worth 10 points. This book is great if you like to read adventure stories with twists.
I would recommend this book to years 4, 5 and 6.
