PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Yesterday, for the first time in over a year, the whole school gathered together for our school assembly. It was a fantastic sight to see our 1065 students in the one venue. Our assembly structure moving forward will look a little different this year. One week we will be having a whole school assembly, where the Mathletics certificates will be distributed. The following week there will be a Senior Assembly (Years 4-6) and the week after a Junior Assembly (Years 3-6) where the Valued Student Awards will be given out to the students.
All assemblies will be live streamed to the parents. I hope that many of you are taking the opportunity to access this live stream to be part of our school happenings.
It continues to be very busy around school with many meetings with builders and architects as we move forward towards the masterplan for our school rebuild. Hours and hours of preliminary works have been spent on this so far.
It’s such an exciting time for the school and for the future of our children.
Have a fantastic week.

SCHOOL MATTERS

MONTH OF MAY UNIFORM SALE
For the whole month of May the 2nd hand uniform shop will be running a HUGE sale.
All items are $2 each, bags $5! Bargain!
New school hats are $15.
Parent volunteer Nikki Kaur, who has been coordinating our uniform shop for the past several years has handed over this role to Nicole Stenton. We thank Nikki so much for all her hours of dedication and time to running this service for our parent community. Welcome Nicole to the role! Nicole also diligently checks and returns items from lost property to their owners when items are named clearly. She can be seen regularly scouring the yard for stray jumpers, drink bottles and hats!
All families can help by ensuring all their child’s belongings are named.

YEAR 6 WINTER INTERSCHOOL SPORT
Year 6 Winter Interschool Sport began last Thursday with all teams playing away against Coatesville. This term students participating in the competitive fixture will play 6 round robin matches against schools in the Bentleigh District with the winter sport finals taking place on Thursday 17th June. Parents are welcome to support their child and the school in the form of umpiring or scoring; please speak to your child’s sports coach if you’re available. The winter fixture can be found here at Bentleigh District Winter Fixture.
Students not participating in the competitive fixture are enjoying competitive intraschool games at school focusing on fundamental motor skills, hand eye coordination and team work. Students even get to experience umpiring their peers! Later in the term these students will also enjoy two sessions of lawn bowls at the local South Oakleigh Bowls Club.
There is no permission or payment required for the regular winter interschool sport program in Term 2. Thank you to Marcus Mooney, P.E staff and the Year 6 teachers for organising this wonderful program and giving up their time to coach our children.

Mathletics
Mathletics is a fantastic maths platform for families and students to support learning in the classroom and at home. Every student at OSPS has a profile that is differentiated to their point of need. You’ll notice that your child may have several groups they have been asked to work in.
Each week Year 1-6 classroom teachers will assign students activities based on the learning being completed in class. These activities are to completed with your support at home during the week to help complement the teaching and learning program. Your child should be accessing Mathletics regularly to complete homework activities and achieve their 1,000 points each week.
For more information on how Mathletics can support your child at home please click on this link; Mathletics at home.
World Maths Day!
Next week, May 5th is World Maths Day, one of the world’s largest global educational events! This day aims to get primary and secondary school students excited and enthusiastic about learning maths. We are constantly using maths in our everyday lives, from the telling the time, counting and adding, to measuring and using money – maths is everywhere!
At Oakleigh South Primary School, we love to provide engaging and challenging maths lessons at every level. We also use Mathletics to help complement our learning. This year the “World’s Largest Online Maths Competition” is back! You can join millions of students across the globe as they celebrate World Maths Day and compete in Live Mathletics challenges. There will be 20 x one-minute challenges available.
The goal is simple: get as many questions correct as you can within one minute and be crowned the winning mathlete! You can earn 1 point for each correct answer that goes towards your score. Fingers crossed you might even make it onto the World Maths Day Hall of Fame! Winners will progress through to the global finals, which will take place two weeks after World Maths Day. They’ll go head to head with three peers from around the world in a live-streamed knockout tournament, with prizes for the champions.
This event runs for 48 hours to cover all time zones. Your child will automatically be able to take part using their school subscription- just log in on the day and let the games begin! We encourage all students to take part, try their best and most importantly have fun. May the best Mathlete win!
