PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear Parents and Carers,
Last Thursday the whole school enjoyed dressing up in their favourite footy colours to celebrate the weekend’s impending AFL and NRL grand finals. The children and staff spirits were up as each class showed off their team colours (from footy and sporting codes from all over the world) and the longest kick from each class, which was a highlight! It was wonderful to see that we could still enjoy this annual activity with some creative improvisation!! Thank you to everyone who supported this activity.
Last Wednesday night, the 2021 Prep Transition program began with an information night for new parents. It is certainly a ‘different’ look transition program this year, but the Zoom meeting was very well received with very interested parents. This year there have been no school tours so many of our new families have not stepped inside our gates. Thank you to all who attended and our prep staff who presented an informative session. The program continues this Friday with our kinder children who will join together via a Zoom session.
Lastly, a reminder that next Tuesday, 3rd November, is the Melbourne Cup public holiday. School will be operating as normal on the Monday.
I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the week.
Ron Cantlon
Principal

STUDENT SHOWCASE
OSPS PHYSICAL EDUCATION & SPORT
It’s great to have all the children back at school. Physical Education for all year levels will have a heavy emphasis on games (Co-operative and Invasion games) and children having fun after so many weeks at home.
The children have missed so much this year – Cross-country, Athletics and Winter Inter-school sport for the Year 6’s.
Once a week the Year 6’s are participating in their Summer Sport that was cut short back in March and later this term they’ll get a taste of the Winter Sport they were supposed to play, by playing games against each other, rather than other schools.
The Year 5’s are preparing for their 2021 Inter School sport program by experiencing each of the 10 sports (each Tuesday morning), before making a decision on which sport they wish to participate in.

SCHOOL EVENT

FOOTY DAY – Thursday, 22nd October
Footy Colours Day 2020 was celebrated by the students and staff of OSPS last Thursday. Hamstrung by COVID restrictions, it would have been easy to just let the day pass altogether. But that is not how we do things at Oakleigh South. The school was filled with the colours of sporting teams from around Australia and the globe. At last count we saw 6 different sports represented. Footy, cricket, soccer, rugby league, basketball and even ice hockey!!!
Each class had a chance to compete in the longest kick competition and congratulations to the boys and girls who were winners. What was extremely pleasing though, was the encouragement shown by other competitors. Winning isn’t everything and sometimes it is how you conduct yourself is what really matters. Classes did related activities throughout the day with some designing their very own football jumper!
As a school community we connected on the padlet with some awesome images of students, their siblings and even some pets who got dressed up as well! https://padlet.com/nicholasmorrey/3wtd0xrln1gxyqif
Last year we raised $1455 for the Fight Cancer Foundation. This year expectations were lower as payment was optional in light of recent events but as usual the OSPS community exceeded all expectations. As of Monday 4pm, we have raised $1,882. We can’t express how grateful and proud we are of this. Thank you to all who made a donation and know that it is going to a very worthy cause.
Lastly, thanks to Miss Gunning, Mrs Van Delft, Mrs Farry and Mr Rowe who gave their assistance at different stages in preparing Footy Day. Seeing the smiles on the faces of students was so wonderful to see. We love having our students back and hope that the smiles continue long into the term!!!
Mr Morrey
