PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to O.S.P.S. for 2024 and a very big welcome the new families who have joined our school community for the first time. I hope you all have had a fantastic break full of family time and lots of rest!

Yesterday our new prep children started and although it was a short day for them, they have settled in extremely well. All the other year levels are well settled into their programs too.

I would also like to welcome our new staff members and of course all our staff, many of them who have new roles at OSPS for 2024. They too have settled in and are looking forward to a fantastic year.

The building works are on the home straight and it won’t be long until our school is operating back to normal. Everything is falling into place and looking amazing! Thank you for your continued patience as we near the end of this extensive building project.

For your information, work to upgrade the oval carpark will begin in the second half of the year. In the meantime, please take care of your children as you walk to and from your car and please remain respectful to each other during busy times.

As usual, all relevant information, notices, and payments etc will be sent to you through the COMPASS platform, including our weekly newsletter which will be available every Wednesday.

At O.S.P.S. we are all looking forward to a fantastic 2024!

Ron

Principal

SCHOOL MATTERS

VILLAGE REBUILD PROGRESS

The Village has had huge works undertaken over the school holidays. We are excited to share with the school community some photos of the progress.

At the end of last year, black new fencing was erected to secure the Village area. New garden beds have been installed that will be used for planting of vegetables, herbs and fruit. The students will take care of these as they grow from seedlings to fully grown plants. When their produce ripens they will be harvested and used in the Village Cooking program to make tasty dishes and delights. Eventually for market garden sales within the school.

A hydroponics and aquaponics enclosure has been erected which will house plants that grow in water. Connected to the aquaponics are fish tanks which will house live fish and are connected to four garden beds which use the nutrients from the fish to help plants grow. Hydropinics will arrive in the next few weeks, these will operate through a large hydroponic nutrient tank which feed the plants through a channel in a film of water.

The green house was finished and worm farms have been built and installed today!

Two chickens have returned to OSPS from last year’s hatching, they spent a lovely summer holiday at Mrs Dwyers house. At the start of term 2 the year 3’s are expecting their incubators and chicken eggs to arrive. They will eagarly watch them hatch and then some of the chickens will be lucky enough to stay for the year and begin laying eggs.

The ground has been covered in crushed rock to help draining and form an attractive walking path.

It is all happening in the Village! Watch this space for further updates!

THE MUSIC SCHOOL – PIANO & KEYBOARD LESSONS @ OSPS AFTERSCHOOL

The Music School is again pleased to offer guitar (Friday) and keyboard (Wednesday) lessons after school hours at Oakleigh South Primary School for students in years 1– 6. Please indicate if your child is a continuing student from last year or a new student beginning lessons for the first time in Term1. Keyboard may also be offered Fridays if Wednesdays book out.

It’s extremely important that you give us your three (3) preferred times in order of most, to least preferred. Sessions will be at 3:30pm, 4pm, 4:30pm, 5pm or 5:30pm. Earliest times will be filled first.

Preference for times is given to continuing students from last year, on a first come first served basis – so please return forms ASAP. Guitar students need their own guitar (we can recommend a suitable instrument), but keyboard students can use the school keyboards. Cost is $19.80 per lesson for all.

Guitar lessons will begin on Friday 2nd Feb. Keyboard lessons will begin Wednesday 7th Feb. There are 8 lessons in Term 1 and the total cost per student is $158.40. There is a discount for cash and the cost is thus reduced to $150 for this term.

As in previous years, fees paid late incur an administration fee of $20.

Please fill in the following form and e-mail the details to Perry Vlahos perryv@optusnet.com.au
