As many of you will know our school, through the Year 3 Village, and an ex student and parent, has established a connection with a small impoverished village school in Tigray , Ethiopia.   Ex- student Haftu Strintzos was adopted by a local family and attended OSPS  in 2011 and 2012.

For several years  the Year 3 Jump Rope for Heart initiative has enabled us, not only to support the Heart Foundation, but to send funds to enable all 420 children from the Hawzien village to attend the village school  – $3.50 per child per year is all it takes! This covers the exercise books and supplies for a child for the whole school year!

With the help of the whole school community the Year 3’s  have also raised enough funds  to provide much needed sporting  equipment and to pipe water from the new well in the village to the school for drinking and educational activities. The plan is for us to continue to develop and extend this relationship into the future. This year, aside from the year’s school supplies, monies raised will be used to begin to set up a library.
Maria Strintzos has worked and volunteered for an Ethiopian local organization the Relief Society of Tigray (REST) for over 25 years. REST has an office in Hawzien which is the district where Haftu comes from so everything donated can be facilitated and tracked by Maria through the office.
Teacher – Sean Alston spent two weeks working and teaching – for 2 weeks in Tsefah Primary School in Dec/Jan 2015/16.  This was a life changing experience for Sean and a chance to see the  impact of our donations first hand.

Please consider sponsoring a Year 3 child for their Jump Off Day on Wednesday,15th November and /or donating generously on the Dress up for Tigray Day for the whole  school on Thursday 23rd November.

Also, a reminder to parents to please follow the speed limits as well as entry/exit signs.

The new school year in Tigray began in September and as a result of our 2016 Year 3 Village kid’s efforts and the generous donations of their sponsors – every child – all 420 Tsefah Primary School students –  were issued with exercise books, pens, pencils, erasers and sharpeners for the 2016 – 2017 school year. The cost to send a child to school in Tigray for a year is $3.50, less than the cost of a cup of coffee!

Ex-student Haftu and his mother Maria visit Tigray each year and continue to raise funds for the Haftu’s former school.

Working Bee

Thank you very much to the families who came to the working bee on Sunday.

As you will all notice the gardens are looking a lot neater as a result of the hard work. It was a great way to meet new families and for the kids to get out and help look after their school.

School Banking

There will be no School Banking next Monday, 6th November due to the Curriculum Day.
School Banking will resume on Monday, 13th November.

Prep Showcase

On Tuesday the 24th of October the Prep children brought their teddy bears to school for their annual Teddy Bear Sleepover. The children made sure their teddies were fast asleep before they went home.

The next morning when we walked into our classrooms, everyone was so surprised and shocked at what the bears had got up to! It looked like the teddies had a huge party at school…those naughty bears!

We also enjoyed a Teddy Bear Picnic with our buddies!
